About

Mission/History

Founded in 1964, The Hutchison Symphony Association is the governing body of the Hutchinson Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1964. The Hutchinson Symphony performs four symphony concerts each year.

The mission of the Hutchinson Symphony Association is to bring about live orchestra performances of classical and other quality music to the people of our area and to encourage young people to listen to and perform great music.

In addition to regular season concerts, members of the orchestra also visit ten to twelve area elementary schools each fall, over a period of two days, to perform School Swing concerts. School Swing concerts are live, 30-minute, orchestral concerts of child-appropriate music attended by a total of 3,000 young people each year. We hope this experience encourages the students to learn to enjoy this type of music all their lives, and for some of them to learn to play an instrument. The children are from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds so, for many of them, these concerts may be the only opportunity they ever have to experience live, orchestral concerts.
Then, in February the orchestra performs at the Fox Theatre for By the Bus where more than 2000 children attend morning and afternoon concerts.

And, again, at Dillon Nature Center each year in June as part of the free summer music series.
